#fempowerathon tbr

Today is fempowerathon day 1 and here is my tbr!

It takes place from the 19th of March to the 26th!

Here are the challenges that you can take part in:

  • a woman in position of power
  • a woman of colour
  • an LGBT+ woman
  • a prominent sister relationship
  • a woman with a mental illness
  • an own voices novel
  • read a book about a woman not set in the western world
  • a graphic novel by a female

You just need to read books based on the prompts above and you can mix and match them too.

On to what I plan on reading!

I may end up adding other titles if I can get through these!

Starting from the bottom of this pile I have Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I’ve actually read this one before but I wanted to reread it and it also fits under the sister relationship challenge as the main character and her twin go to college together.

The next three books are a trilogy. I know a little about these and they were highly recommended and of course they are very pretty! I’ll be putting these under the woman in position of power due to the main character being female and having to protect the main male character. I’ll also be reading some superhero comics for this particular challenge too.

Everything leads to you is a book that I’ve wanted to read for so long. It’s going under the challenge for an LGBT+ woman as the main character is a lesbian.

The next two books focus on mental illness, one an eating disorder and the other on suicide.

These are some comics that I put together though I may not get to read all of them!

Harley Quinn features a bisexual lead character and she also is part of the Suicide Squad comics. DC Bombshells not only features an entire cast of female superheroes but also has Batwoman, a lesbian superhero.

I will be adding a couple of titles later on, like Ms Marvel issues that I need to catch up which will cover the WOC challenge. I’ll also be reading some manga that are set in Japan to cover the not set in the western world challenge!

I’m really excited to start this read-a-thon and I hope you join in too!

I will be posting a list of recommendations for this challenge of books that I’ve already read. I’ve also created lists of goodreads too! Though I’m not a fan of the idea that anyone can add books to it. I’m having issues with one person who keeps doing it to them and I don’t even know her.

DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017

I recently got the DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 book free with my pull list. It’s a really interesting guide to DC and their comics.

One of the lists in here is what DC view to be their 25 most essential graphic novels. Out of 25 I own 10! I actually owned 2 more years back but ended up getting rid of them due to space!

Here are the top 25:

  • Watchmen
  • Batman: The Killing Joke
  • Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
  • The Sandman Vol 1: Preludes and Nocturnes
  • Batman Vol 1: The Court of Owls
  • V for Vendetta
  • Justice League Vol 1: Origin
  • Batman:Hush
  • All-Star Superman
  • Preacher Book One
  • Batman: Year One
  • Wonder Woman Vol 1: Blood
  • DC: The New Frontier
  • Batman:Earth One
  • DC Universe: Rebirth
  • Batman: The Long Halloween
  • The Flash Vol 1: Move Forward
  • Batgirl Vol 1: Batgirl of Burnside
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us Year One-The Complete Collection
  • Fables Vol 1: Legends in Exile
  • Flashpoint
  • The Sandman: Overture
  • Gotham Academy Vol 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy
  • Wonder Woman: Earth One vol 1
  • Aquaman Vol 1: The Trench

Watchmen is such a good comic! I really enjoyed it and I’ve read it multiple times! I also really loved the movie.

While The Killing Joke is highly recommended by most Batman fans it’s not a favourite of mine. I did like some aspects of it but it’s treatment of Batgirl always leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I got this for the same reason I bought the Killing Joke, they are highly recommended! I wasn’t the biggest fan of the art in this!

Fables was a series that was recommended to me by an old friend and it took me way too long before I actually got it! This is the deluxe edition and I’m hoping to get the rest eventually. The covers are so pretty! If you liked Fables they did not only a video game based on it called The Wolf Among Us (which also then in turn had a comic book based on that! Comicception right there!)

And my favourite super hero of all time! Batgirl! I am obsessed with her. Issue 35 is when this version took over and was my first single issue gifted to me by a great friend. I loved this run! I also am a huge fan of Cassandra Cain’s run as Batgirl, which DC actually reprinted a while back. I’m already hyped that they finally listened and they are also reprinting Stephanie Brown’s run too!

I got into this series late and in a weird way. One of the main reasons I collect single issues is for the art. I love the covers, especially some varient ones. Issue 8 is roughly where my interests peaked for this series. The cover was so beautiful!

I ended up also getting issue 7 later on buying the volumes for the issues that I had missed. It’s an unusual series but I really loved it!

This is the only Justice League comic that I own and I still need to read it. I do love the animated movies and I’m really excited for the live action movie that is coming out!

I loved this Batman comic and I really need to get around to getting the other volumes more so now that it’s finished!

Another highly recommended graphic novel and another one I really enjoyed! It’s movie version wasn’t too bad either!

This is one of my newest purchases from this list and it’s now one of my favourite Batman comics. I love that there are so many villains in this comic and it’s so well drawn and the story is so good! Highly recommended by me!

So that’s the 25 most essential graphic novels from DC. So what do you think? Do you agree with this list? For me it seemed more like a this is what you should read to prep for some of Rebirth and maybe the movies.

How many of the 25 do you own? I’m hoping to up my number at some point!

Book Haul: Comics and manga

Since I recently updated my collection I decided to do a quick shop online to fill more gaps that I had!

The Walking Dead is one of my favourite comics and I’m finally up to date with the trades!

I just needed volume 21 and the newest volume 27! I’m hoping to re-read the series and finally catch up!

Manga, at least when you’re not buying it, tends to quickly add up! I’m behind on many series so I’m trying to avoid starting new ones! In this haul I bought the newer volumes of Blue Exorcist and Kimi ni todoke. Both of these are really good though I will need to refresh my memory with a re-read. One of my favourite things about manga is that they are so easy to re-read and they tend to be more fun to do that with too!

Saga is a comic that I will always recommend and I finally have the newest volume!

And finally from this haul I also picked up Lady Killer volume 1! I’m super excited to read this. The art looks great and the story line is very interesting!

There are only a few series that I’m really hoping to update soon. I’m about 5 volumes behind in Attack on titan so I need to update that soon! I’m also hoping to get the newest volume of Giant Days! It’s such a good series!

#ayearthon tbr

It’s finally March 6th and that means time for another read-a-thon! This is what I hopefully plan to read during this one!
I’m also hoping to take part in fempowerathon this month too!

The theme for this months ayearathon is cover buys! Some of these books are 100 per cent bought for that reason!

This will be a rather quick post but follow me over on twitter to see me post my progress!

I’m really excited to read (and in the case of The Walking Dead re read) these books! Some we chosen to go with the theme of cover buys (like Lady Killer and Fantastic Beasts) while others are ones I’ve been wanting to read and wanting to catch up on!

Are you taking part? I’d love to know what you’re reading!

Also I have a mini book haul coming up featuring one of the book above!
