Book Haul!

Really excited in getting back to this and also super hyped for this haul!

Food Wars is one of my favourite series at the moment! It’s so good! I have to admit that when I first tried to watch the show I was put off by the fan service but when you get past that it’s so good. It’s funny that I went from not liking it to watching the show a number of times and owning the manga. It’s such a fun show and the food looks amazing! I do highly recommend watching the anime as well as reading the manga. The show really does a great job with the cooking aspect, my only issue is that the 2nd season is way too short! It rushed through the plot too quickly.

Season 3 was also just announced and is coming out this fall! I’m so happy that we get new episodes and a future volume is coming out with a short episode on dvd.

I saw this next title when I was on instagram one day and I fell in love! I had to get it. Not only is the art beautiful but it’s also influenced by Ireland and our myths. I can’t wait to give it a read. I may write a review over on Goodreads when I’m done!

A friend of mine got the book on the left and after hearing her say it was good I needed to get myself a copy. I like to get books with Lolita’s in them or some sort of Japanese fashion. I’m a huge fan of Kamikaze Girls and knowing the author was a part of this project made me want it even more. There is a mix of essays and comics written by Lolita’s. There’s even a description of the style of the start which is quite cute. I’ve taken a couple of photos on instagram that show two of the pages describing Gothic and Old School Lolita. Both cute styles and the drawings are great. They actually both reminded me of a couple of girls in my community. If you are interested in Lolita or just Japanese fashion in general this to me is a must buy! I grew up in my teens loving Lolita and buying and reading whatever I could get my hands on. This is one of the better books that I have.

Giant Days is such a great and fun comic! I’m head over heals in love with it! Along with Food Wars this is a series that I try to buy almost as soon as it comes out. It’s such a relatable series as I’m currently in University! It stars three women going through University in England and their friendship is so cute! If you are wanting to get into comics this is one I would recommend. Along with Lumberjanes and Paper Girls, it’s so great seeing comics with female leads.

Have you read any or want to read any of the above? Let me know below!

Also I’m currently taking part in a manga reading challenge over on goodreads! I’m hoping to read at least 50 volumes this year, I’m on about 20 right now! If you want to take part it’s under the Manga and Anime Lovers group challenge list!

Catch Up!

So I’ve neglected this blog a bit too long and I really want to get back into it! Since we last spoke I’ve finished 3rd year and somehow managed to actually pass everything! I was so stressed out about it so I’m happy that I have one thing less to worry about!

I’m still looking for somewhere to rent in Limerick. One more year of Uni to go! The rent in Limerick has gone insane! The landlords are overpricing houses that are in terrible shape, with no basic heating and mould. It’s crazy. I can’t wait to finish my last year! I had to travel from Clonmel the past semester (mostly due to spending the first semester in Belfast for Erasmus) and I found it way too hard to keep up. Not only was it expensive but I couldn’t make half my classes due to bus time tables! Then a few weeks left in my semester the bus service went on strike! I was very lucky that my dad drove me in the odd time so I could make important classes. Light a candle for me guys so I don’t have to go through that in my last year!

It’s Summer now so I’m currently trying to find a job, which might as well be impossible in this day and age. Fingers crossed again as I really need the money. I’m hoping to keep myself busy which hopefully includes doing more work here and in my life. I’m sorting through my room right now hoping to de-clutter and try to use up stuff I have before I buy any more. My goals for the Summer include: fully cleaning and organising my room, maybe doing that on the rest of the house too, reading more including being ahead for college work, work on my FYP, losing even some weight, planning my outfit for a future event, etc. If I can get some of those done then fantastic!

I am super excited for next year! I’m looking forward to some of my classes, especially women’s lit and African lit. I’m also really excited for an event that my community has put together in October. I’m hoping to put together a really cute coord but I’m a bit stumped on what to do!

But we’ll get to that when we get to that! I’m 100 per cent focused on reducing my stress levels at the moment!

I want to thank you for following my small blog and reading what I write! I really appreciate it! I’m looking forward to really stepping up and doing more with it so let me know what it is you like the most or if there is anything that you’d like to see here more often! Thanks! I’m also hoping to get a new blog name as this one just reminds me of my teenage self!

I have a couple of new books so look forward to a book haul today!

#fempowerathon tbr

Today is fempowerathon day 1 and here is my tbr!

It takes place from the 19th of March to the 26th!

Here are the challenges that you can take part in:

  • a woman in position of power
  • a woman of colour
  • an LGBT+ woman
  • a prominent sister relationship
  • a woman with a mental illness
  • an own voices novel
  • read a book about a woman not set in the western world
  • a graphic novel by a female

You just need to read books based on the prompts above and you can mix and match them too.

On to what I plan on reading!

I may end up adding other titles if I can get through these!

Starting from the bottom of this pile I have Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I’ve actually read this one before but I wanted to reread it and it also fits under the sister relationship challenge as the main character and her twin go to college together.

The next three books are a trilogy. I know a little about these and they were highly recommended and of course they are very pretty! I’ll be putting these under the woman in position of power due to the main character being female and having to protect the main male character. I’ll also be reading some superhero comics for this particular challenge too.

Everything leads to you is a book that I’ve wanted to read for so long. It’s going under the challenge for an LGBT+ woman as the main character is a lesbian.

The next two books focus on mental illness, one an eating disorder and the other on suicide.

These are some comics that I put together though I may not get to read all of them!

Harley Quinn features a bisexual lead character and she also is part of the Suicide Squad comics. DC Bombshells not only features an entire cast of female superheroes but also has Batwoman, a lesbian superhero.

I will be adding a couple of titles later on, like Ms Marvel issues that I need to catch up which will cover the WOC challenge. I’ll also be reading some manga that are set in Japan to cover the not set in the western world challenge!

I’m really excited to start this read-a-thon and I hope you join in too!

I will be posting a list of recommendations for this challenge of books that I’ve already read. I’ve also created lists of goodreads too! Though I’m not a fan of the idea that anyone can add books to it. I’m having issues with one person who keeps doing it to them and I don’t even know her.

DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017

I recently got the DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 book free with my pull list. It’s a really interesting guide to DC and their comics.

One of the lists in here is what DC view to be their 25 most essential graphic novels. Out of 25 I own 10! I actually owned 2 more years back but ended up getting rid of them due to space!

Here are the top 25:

  • Watchmen
  • Batman: The Killing Joke
  • Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
  • The Sandman Vol 1: Preludes and Nocturnes
  • Batman Vol 1: The Court of Owls
  • V for Vendetta
  • Justice League Vol 1: Origin
  • Batman:Hush
  • All-Star Superman
  • Preacher Book One
  • Batman: Year One
  • Wonder Woman Vol 1: Blood
  • DC: The New Frontier
  • Batman:Earth One
  • DC Universe: Rebirth
  • Batman: The Long Halloween
  • The Flash Vol 1: Move Forward
  • Batgirl Vol 1: Batgirl of Burnside
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us Year One-The Complete Collection
  • Fables Vol 1: Legends in Exile
  • Flashpoint
  • The Sandman: Overture
  • Gotham Academy Vol 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy
  • Wonder Woman: Earth One vol 1
  • Aquaman Vol 1: The Trench

Watchmen is such a good comic! I really enjoyed it and I’ve read it multiple times! I also really loved the movie.

While The Killing Joke is highly recommended by most Batman fans it’s not a favourite of mine. I did like some aspects of it but it’s treatment of Batgirl always leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I got this for the same reason I bought the Killing Joke, they are highly recommended! I wasn’t the biggest fan of the art in this!

Fables was a series that was recommended to me by an old friend and it took me way too long before I actually got it! This is the deluxe edition and I’m hoping to get the rest eventually. The covers are so pretty! If you liked Fables they did not only a video game based on it called The Wolf Among Us (which also then in turn had a comic book based on that! Comicception right there!)

And my favourite super hero of all time! Batgirl! I am obsessed with her. Issue 35 is when this version took over and was my first single issue gifted to me by a great friend. I loved this run! I also am a huge fan of Cassandra Cain’s run as Batgirl, which DC actually reprinted a while back. I’m already hyped that they finally listened and they are also reprinting Stephanie Brown’s run too!

I got into this series late and in a weird way. One of the main reasons I collect single issues is for the art. I love the covers, especially some varient ones. Issue 8 is roughly where my interests peaked for this series. The cover was so beautiful!

I ended up also getting issue 7 later on buying the volumes for the issues that I had missed. It’s an unusual series but I really loved it!

This is the only Justice League comic that I own and I still need to read it. I do love the animated movies and I’m really excited for the live action movie that is coming out!

I loved this Batman comic and I really need to get around to getting the other volumes more so now that it’s finished!

Another highly recommended graphic novel and another one I really enjoyed! It’s movie version wasn’t too bad either!

This is one of my newest purchases from this list and it’s now one of my favourite Batman comics. I love that there are so many villains in this comic and it’s so well drawn and the story is so good! Highly recommended by me!

So that’s the 25 most essential graphic novels from DC. So what do you think? Do you agree with this list? For me it seemed more like a this is what you should read to prep for some of Rebirth and maybe the movies.

How many of the 25 do you own? I’m hoping to up my number at some point!

Book Haul: Comics and manga

Since I recently updated my collection I decided to do a quick shop online to fill more gaps that I had!

The Walking Dead is one of my favourite comics and I’m finally up to date with the trades!

I just needed volume 21 and the newest volume 27! I’m hoping to re-read the series and finally catch up!

Manga, at least when you’re not buying it, tends to quickly add up! I’m behind on many series so I’m trying to avoid starting new ones! In this haul I bought the newer volumes of Blue Exorcist and Kimi ni todoke. Both of these are really good though I will need to refresh my memory with a re-read. One of my favourite things about manga is that they are so easy to re-read and they tend to be more fun to do that with too!

Saga is a comic that I will always recommend and I finally have the newest volume!

And finally from this haul I also picked up Lady Killer volume 1! I’m super excited to read this. The art looks great and the story line is very interesting!

There are only a few series that I’m really hoping to update soon. I’m about 5 volumes behind in Attack on titan so I need to update that soon! I’m also hoping to get the newest volume of Giant Days! It’s such a good series!

#ayearthon tbr

It’s finally March 6th and that means time for another read-a-thon! This is what I hopefully plan to read during this one!
I’m also hoping to take part in fempowerathon this month too!

The theme for this months ayearathon is cover buys! Some of these books are 100 per cent bought for that reason!

This will be a rather quick post but follow me over on twitter to see me post my progress!

I’m really excited to read (and in the case of The Walking Dead re read) these books! Some we chosen to go with the theme of cover buys (like Lady Killer and Fantastic Beasts) while others are ones I’ve been wanting to read and wanting to catch up on!

Are you taking part? I’d love to know what you’re reading!

Also I have a mini book haul coming up featuring one of the book above!

Catch Up on Series Book Haul!

I’ve been behind in many of the series that I collect but one of them that really stands out to me is The Walking Dead. I adore the comic but I just haven’t had the chance to get new volumes. It’s very easy to fall behind in comics and manga. They all seem to come out all at once! I’m hoping to catch up on some titles with a couple of new hauls this year.

I came across these recently on sale and I had to get them! These are volumes 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26. I actually went ahead and ordered the missing volumes (21 and 27) online. This means that I am officially up to date with The Walking Dead in terms of trades once they come in the mail! I’m so excited to catch up. The free issue I got too is the next one after volume 27! I love this comic a lot and I actually much prefer it over the tv show. I just find the show a bit too slow moving and at times boring.

This Outlast issue actually came free with volume 25 of The Walking Dead. I’m intrigued to see what it’s like!

I love Harley and her comics. I’m currently collecting the New 52 volumes and this is gap in one of them, a story including Power Girl. I’m hoping to finish collecting the new 52 volumes as I do want to get the Rebirth volumes one day.

One of my goals for 2017 is to add to my comic collection, more so my DC collection. I love Batman and I want to read even more of his stuff so I’ve been picking up the odd title when I find them! Overall for my DC collection I want to catch up on the new 52 titles and I only have volume 1 of Batman. Now that rebirth is out the new 52 comics are complete and I loved volume 1. Fingers crossed I’ll have completed at least Batman’s run by the end of the year!

This is the only book in this haul and I’m hoping to finally start this series this summer! This is the third book in the Red Queen series and I’ve heard good things about it. There is a 4th book out next year which I’m hoping is the last one. Is it just me or are books getting longer? I have so many series that are ending up being like 6 books long and sometimes I get bored waiting for the next book. I get into a bad habit of getting the new books and waiting for the next one to read them leaving me with unread piles of almost or even worse finished series that I’m still putting off as they took too long to get!

I’m really looking forward to my next book haul! I did a small order online. I got my missing Walking Dead comics, some series that I needed to update (Blue Exorcist 16, Kimi ni Todoke 26 and Saga 6) along with a new title I wanted to try Lady Killer!

Giant Days 4 seems to be having issues with their publishers so I’m hoping to get that with my next order!

Any recent purchases? I’d love to hear about them!
